Digital X-Ray Detector

Digital radiography, also known as direct digital radiography, uses x-ray–sensitive plates that directly capture data during the patient examination, immediately transferring it to a computer system without the use of an intermediate cassette as is the case with CR.

DR or digital radiography work by converting the X-rays that strike its surface into light, and then turning the light into electronic data that a computer can display as a high-quality digital image.

Digital x-ray often utilizes flat panel detectors which consist of a scintillator layer and an amorphous silicon thin film transistor (TFT) array, which have several advantages over both traditional film radiography and computed radiography.

One advantage of a digital imaging system is the superior gray-scale resolution that results. Digital imaging requires an x-ray unit, sensors to capture the images, computer hardware and software to view, store, and transfer images.

DR has also opened a window of opportunity for the security NDT industry due to several key advantages including excellent image quality, high POD (probability of detection), portability, environmental friendliness and immediate imaging. Nondestructive testing of materials is vital in fields such as aerospace and electronics where integrity of materials is vital for safety and cost reasons. Advantages of digital technologies include the ability to provide results in real time. Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and technology industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage.

The DR sensor digitizes the radiation passing through the component under inspection so that the radiographic image can be displayed immediately on a PC screen. There are three main digital sensors: CCD, CMOS and Amorphous Silicon.

NDT is commonly used in forensic engineering, mechanical engineering, petroleum engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, systems engineering, aeronautical engineering, medicine, and art.
